Why are the Harley Davidson motorcycles and cadillacs cars often referred to as hogs? When did this 1rst start

Hah, I knew I wasn't crazy, I have heard caddy's called hogs by several different people. Thanks BluffMike!
i work in a harley shop and i have heard these cars called a hog. gas hog and a road hog. most folks dont own both of these vehicals

I would say that Harley Davidsons are the only vehicle manufacturer who are supposed to be "HOGS"…not cadillacs. HOG stands for Harley Owners Group, which in turn means that when one refers to their Harley as a hog…that they are most likely a member of the group.

Origin of Hog nickname
Beginning in 1920 a team that consistently won races had a hog, a pig, as their mascot. Following a win, they would put the pig (a real one) on the back of their Harley and take a victory lap. A photo of the pig is also on their website. In 1983, an organization was formed, taking advantage of the long-standing nickname by turning "hog" into the acronym H.O.G., for Harley Owners Group.
Harley-Davidson attempted to trademark "hog," but in 1999 ultimately lost the case, with the appellate panel ruling that "hog" had become a generic term for large motorcycles, and is therefore unprotectable as a trademark.
On August 15th 2006 Harley Davidson Inc. had its NYSE ticker changed from HDI to HOG.

I've heard of Caddys being refered to as "road hog". Called that because they were such a large car, I guess.
